What is secure multi-party computation?

Secure multi-party computation (SMPC) is a set of cryptographic methods that let several parties jointly compute a result from their private data without revealing that data to each other.

How does SMPC work?

Parties split their inputs into shares, compute on the shares together, and combine the outputs into an answer, so no one sees another party's raw input.

What is the difference between SMPC and encryption?

Encryption protects data at rest or in transit. SMPC protects data while it is being used in a calculation involving several parties.

What is private set intersection?

It is an SMPC technique in which parties learn which items they share, such as matching identifiers, without revealing the rest of their data.

Why is SMPC useful for fraud detection?

It lets institutions check whether an identity has been seen as a problem elsewhere without exchanging customer records.
